In 2025, the Fire Weather Index (FWI) underwent a major update as part of the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System (CFFDRS). This evolution aims to modernize the system, the last revision of which dated back to the early 1990s, while maintaining its overall structure.
The FWI 2025 incorporates:
Use of hourly weather data
Reference model based on a mature pine forest
New optional indices for grassland areas
Work is underway to extend the system to other types of fuels, including peatlands.
This update enhances the flexibility of the FWI and its suitability to current needs in vegetation fire management, both in operational and scientific contexts.
